27OctNot the best week

So last weekend was great. The retreat was everything I had hoped for going into it. I had a really great time. And to be honest, it was nice to have a break from us worrying about Lily all the time. Thanks to my sister for taking her off of our hands for the weekend.

This week has been crazy busy. I was really tired after the retreat and I still haven’t had a chance to catch up on my rest. I blame Major League Baseball because they put the World Series games at 8pm Eastern and it’s 11:30pm or midnight before the games are over. I could just go to sleep and find out the score in the morning, but where’s the fun in that.

The saddest part about the World Series for me so far is that the Tigers are really just a couple of plays away from being up 3-1 instead of down 3-1. I’ve never seen so many errors by a pitching staff as I have in this series. And so many of the mistakes are fairly easy plays. Credit to the Cardinals so far, they’ve done what it takes to win. I still don’t think the Tigers are out of it. Historically, teams have come back from a 3-1 defecit 6 times. One of those times was the 1968 Tigers who beat the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals have blown a 3-1 lead twice in their history, 1968 and 1985. That doesn’t have much to do with this series, but you never know when the ghosts are going to show up as Derek Jeter said a few years ago.

I don’t like the end of the month at work. I have so much to do and I’m basically by myself. My manager Ben does the best he can to help me out, but I’m stuck doing most of the hard work on my own. I guess I’d rather work extra hard one week out of the month than have no job at all. I really do like my job, the people I work with, and my boss. I haven’t been able to say that in a very long time.

Okay, time to go I guess. Game 5 tonight and Verlander throwing. Let’s hope he’s better than the first game.

20OctIt’s the Cardinals

The Cardinals won the National League pennant yesterday so they’ll be the lambs to the slaughter against the Tigers in the World Series. I don’t think the Cards have a very good chance to win the series because they worked so hard to beat the Mets. Their pitching rotation is screwed up and their bullpen has been overworked so far in the playoffs.

My prediction for the series: Tigers in 6. (I just say 6 so the Tigers can win at home.)

15OctWow.

Tigers Celebrate

It’s now midnight and I can’t come down from the excitement of today’s events. I watched the Tigers win the ALCS in historic and dramatic fashion and then watched Michigan play their way into the #2 spot in the polls. (They had better be #2 after today.)

When this season started, I honestly believed the Tigers would be a better team than they have been in recent years. I thought they had a shot at playing .500 baseball this season and I thought they could maybe get to 85 wins. I never thought they would be even playing in the playoffs let alone making it to the World Series. I wasn’t alone in my thoughts, 19 baseball “experts” on ESPN made preseason predictions this year and not one picked the Tigers to make the playoffs. This is an incredible story that will be remembered for a very long time. I only wish my dad lived closer so he could experience all of this. We lived in Chicago for the last Tigers World Series, so he’s never gotten to experience it first hand.

Things are not great here in Michigan. The economy is in the toilet and the industry that this state was built on (the automotive industry) is in a free fall. Thousands of people are out of work and more are losing their jobs every day. What this team, like all sports teams in Michigan, give us a release and something to be joyful about. It would be easy to be depressed if all we had was a bleak outlook for the future and the Lions to cheer us up. We are a proud people and we want to show the world that even though we may be down, we’re never out here in the Motor City and the state of Michigan.

Game 1 of the World Series is on Saturday… and the whole world will be watching Detroit cheer.

15OctI don’t believe what I just saw!

Maglio Ordonez just swept the Oakland A’s out of the playoffs with one swing! I don’t know what to say except

WORLD SERIES!!!!!
