07DecDitching Vista

I’ve made the decision to switch our computer back to Windows XP from Windows Vista, I’ll be make the transition back this weekend.  The more we use it, the worse it gets.  I’ve made upgrades on the computer thinking that it would help, but I’m tired of the computer freezing when I do something as simple as deleting a file or opening the Start menu.  I hear that Service Pack 3 is going to bring some speed improvements to XP, so I’m sticking with that for now.  I’m never buying a PC again, my next computer is going to be a Mac.

21AprComputer problems

In every family there is one person who is the “computer guy.” That person is the person who everyone calls when something goes wrong with their computer, and most of the time something is wrong because of a user error. In our family we are lucky enough to have two of those guys, my brother Andrew and myself. Now since I’m the guy who does the fixing of computers for my family and friends, you would think I could keep my own computer up and running. Well I’ve had a miserable ten days of computer issues.

In short, I tried to resize the hard drive partition that Windows Vista is installed on and it ended up corrupting both Vista and XP. I got them both working again, and then I ended up with a virus that wiped out Vista again. It’s been a frustrating time, but now I think we’re on the right track. The most frustrating thing was that I’ve resized hard drives at least a dozen times before and never had any problems. After reading about it online, I discovered that you can’t mess with a Vista partition without totally screwing it up. So if you are planning on installing Vista anytime soon, keep that in mind.

17MarSuper-charged video card

Later today the FedEx truck is going to pull up to our apartment building and I am going to be a very happy man. I won an auction for a new video card for our computer online and it’s going to be coming today. Windows Vista, as pointed out in the Apple commercial below, requires a lot of upgrades to older computers in order to use all of the advanced features.

Our factory installed graphics card isn’t cutting it, so I’m putting in the new one. I really just want to be able to use the Windows Aero features that include the Flip 3D feature and video wallpapers on your desktop. You can see a video of them below.
