17MayA lot to talk about

There’s been plenty of things that happened since my last post on Friday. I had a crazy weekend. As I said in my last post, I was lucky enough to get my hands on tickets to the Red Wings last Friday night. The atmosphere in Joe Louis Arena was overwhelming. It was so loud in there my ears were ringing for about 45 minutes after the game ended. It was fun to see the Wings win and it was great to be there with my friends enjoying the game.

I was back downtown on Saturday afternoon to see The Rocket Summer perform at the State Theater. The concert was really fun, with the exception of the crapfest that goes by the name Boys Like Girls. They were the middle band of the concert and they were awful. The Rocket Summer opened and they were great. The only downside of their performance was that they only had 30 minutes to play which was not nearly long enough. Hellogoodbye was the headliner and they were pretty good. I wasn’t really a huge fan of theirs before, but I liked their live show and their music is growing on me. Below is a clip from their show on Saturday.

Sunday was Mother’s Day and the second time Cassie got to celebrate being a mom. We went to the 9 a.m. service at church, which was the first time we had done that in the 3-plus years we’ve been going to Tri-City. We wanted to make sure we beat the big rush in going out to lunch, but we still ended up waiting an hour to eat. Cassie got a card from Lily that was really cute. (I wrote in it with my right hand so it looked like a little kid wrote in it.)

I’ve been sick the past few days with a runny nose and sore throat. I think I caught it from Lily, which makes this 4 or 5 times that she’s gotten me sick. I was not blessed with a tough immune system, so every time she gets a little cough, I end up sick for a week. I need to start taking vitamins and stuff to build up my immunities.

30AprNot much to say

I looked today and it’s been a week since I’ve posted anything here. I guess there just hasn’t been a whole lot going on this past week to write about.

I was pleased to see the positive reaction to “Idol Gives Back” this past week. Last I had heard there were over $60 million in donations which is awesome. The only problem is that $60 million doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface in dealing with extreme poverty. This is a step in the right direction and a good platform to bring these issues into the homes of Americans.

Lily turns 1 year old on Saturday. It’s crazy to think that it’s already been a whole year since she was born. She’s already grown so much and can do so many things now. She’s walking all over the place and she started learning to climb over the weekend. It’s amazing, but it’s also much more stressful because you can’t take your eye off of her for 5 seconds or else she’ll be off.

We’re having a lot of family come to town this weekend for Lily’s birthday party. This weekend will be the first time in nearly two and a half years that my immediate family will all be in the same place at the same time. It should be a good time.

19AprSanjaya finally gone

So the misery is finally over, Sanjaya was voted off of American Idol last night. I get the point that votefortheworst.com and the like were trying to make, but it was long overdue. I was sucked in by his shy audition and I was really rooting for him going to Hollywood. Once the semi-finals started, I started to reverse my opinion of him because he was pretty bland and uninspiring. When it came down to Sanjaya and Sundance to make the top 12, I was sure that it was the end of the line for him. Here we are almost 2 months later and he’s finally out of my life forever.

He seems like a good guy and I don’t wish anything bad for him, but I don’t ever want to see him on television singing again.

14MarThe next American Idol

Melinda Doolittle

I don’t see how anyone can deny Melinda Doolittle right now. She’s in a whole different class from every other singer on the show except LaKisha. She has not had a bad performance yet and I would argue that all of her performances have been great. I have little faith in the American people to actually vote the way that they should and make Melinda the winner, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

09MarAmerican Idol top 12

Last night they announced the final 12 performers on American Idol. All in all I was pleased with the top 12 and the people that made it in. There were a few surprises including Sanjaya making it in while Sundance went home and I was really surprised that Gina and Haley both made the top 12 while leaving Sabrina out in the cold. Even despite those surprises, I’m satisfied with the group of finalists as a whole.

I know that Cassie was really mad that Sanjaya was picked over Sundance. But if you look at things honestly, Sundance had two mediocre weeks and one really good week. I like him and I would have been happy if he would have made it, but I can’t say that he was clearly better than Sanjaya. I think the bigger injustice is that both Gina and Haley made it in while Sabrina did not. I think Sabrina was better than both of them and should have made it.

I was also pleased to see that A.I. is going to put the huge amount of money the show is making to do some good. I agree with what Simon said last night when he said that everyone has made a lot of money on the show and it’s time that they put some of that to good use.
